Choosing the right clamp for your hose assembly
The connection is leaking. You tighten the clamp. It leaks worse. That sequence almost never means the clamp was loose. It means the clamp is the wrong type, sitting in the wrong place, or should not be a clamp at all.
- Some hose should never be clamped. Hydraulic pressure hose gets a crimped fitting, and no clamp substitutes for one.
- Worm gear is the everyday clamp. Cheap, adjustable, and it point-loads soft hose if you overdo it.
- T-bolt spreads load evenly and holds through vibration. The right answer on anything that shakes.
- Quick release earns its cost only where you disconnect often.
- Clamp over the fitting, not over bare hose, and back from the end so it cannot split.
- Tightening harder rarely fixes a leak. It usually creates the next one.
- Compressed air over half an inch has an OSHA requirement attached to it.

Worth settling before anything else, because the most expensive clamp mistakes are the ones where a clamp was never the right tool.
Hydraulic pressure hose gets crimped
A hydraulic line running at one, three or six thousand psi is held by a crimped ferrule compressed onto the hose by machine to a measured diameter. That is not a fancier clamp, it is a different engineering approach entirely.
No worm gear, T-bolt or band clamp will hold a hydraulic fitting at working pressure. It will seem fine cold and static, then release under load with enough force to injure somebody. The same applies to A/C lines, brake hose and pressure washer hose.

Clamps belong on lower pressure connections over a barbed or shanked fitting: coolant and heater hose, fuel line on carburetted systems, air lines, suction and discharge hose, washdown and general transfer. That covers a great deal of equipment, which is why getting the choice right matters.

Worm gear
A slotted band drawn tight by a screw. Adjustable across a wide range, available everywhere and inexpensive.

T-bolt
A solid band tensioned by a bolt in a T-shaped trunnion. Distributes load evenly around the whole circumference.

Quick release
A lever cam that closes to a preset tension. No tools, and repeatable every time it closes.

A word on pressure. Clamps are not sold with a psi rating the way hose is, because what a clamped joint holds depends on the hose, the barb, the fit and how it was tightened. Directionally, a single worm gear clamp suits low pressure work, a T-bolt holds considerably more, and neither is a substitute for a crimp. Match the clamp to the hose and fitting rating rather than to a number on the packet.
CompatibilityMatch the clamp to the hose
- Soft rubber. Use a wide band. A narrow worm gear clamp digs a groove into soft hose and that groove eventually becomes the leak.
- Silicone. T-bolt, every time. Silicone is soft and tears easily, and it relaxes after fitting, so it wants even pressure and a re-check.
- Wire reinforced. Takes clamping force well, but the clamp must compress the hose onto the barb rather than just squeezing the outer cover.
- Corrugated or convoluted. Clamp only on the smooth cuff if it has one. Crushing corrugations destroys the hose.
- Rigid plastic. Easy to crack. Tighten to seal and no further.
Clamping a spiral or wire reinforced hose without checking the fit. If the clamp is oversized it closes onto the cover and never grips the reinforcement underneath, so the joint feels tight and pulls off under pressure anyway.

Stop tightening. A leak after correct installation means the hose is not seated, the barb is damaged, the clamp is the wrong size, or the hose has hardened and lost its ability to conform. More torque fixes none of those, and it makes the next repair harder.

Compressed air over half an inch
Air hose is where a failed connection becomes a whipping hose, and it is the one clamped application with a federal rule attached.
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.302(b)(7) states that all hoses exceeding half an inch inside diameter shall have a safety device at the source of supply or branch line to reduce pressure in case of hose failure. The same section also requires pneumatic tools to be secured to the hose by positive means so they cannot disconnect accidentally. Read OSHA 1926.302 on power-operated hand tools, and the agency's interpretation letter setting out those provisions.
In practice that means an excess flow valve at the supply, and safety cables across every coupling. A cable costs a few dollars and stops a half inch line taking somebody's eye out.

On Long Island the salt matters more than people expect. Anything on a boat, near the water or on a vehicle that sees winter roads should be all stainless, and 316 if it is genuinely marine. A part-stainless clamp with a plated screw fails at the screw and looks fine right up until it does.

No. Hydraulic hose is held by a crimped ferrule compressed to a measured diameter by machine. No clamp holds a hydraulic fitting at working pressure. It may seem fine cold and static, then release under load with enough force to injure somebody. The same applies to A/C, brake and pressure washer hose.
Worm gear for everyday low pressure work where cost and adjustability matter. T-bolt wherever there is vibration, soft hose such as silicone, or a connection you cannot afford to have back off. T-bolts spread load evenly around the circumference instead of point loading near the housing.
Because tightening was never the fix. Usually the hose is not fully seated on the barb, the clamp is sitting on bare hose rather than over the fitting, the size is wrong, or the hose has hardened and cannot conform any more. Extra torque makes each of those worse.
Over the shank of the fitting, so it compresses hose against metal, and roughly a quarter inch back from the hose end so it cannot split it. A clamp positioned on bare hose beyond the fitting does nothing at all.
Only if both sit over the fitting shank. Two clamps where the second one is out on bare hose is just one clamp doing the work. If a joint genuinely needs two, it is usually a sign the connection should be banded or crimped instead.

All 316 stainless, including the screw. Part-stainless clamps with a plated screw fail at the screw and give no warning first. On Long Island the same logic applies to anything seeing winter road salt.
Better not to. The band has taken a set at its old diameter and the screw threads are usually rounded from the last fitting. A clamp is the cheapest part of the job and the one most likely to cause a comeback.
