How to choose a pressure washer hose

Most pressure washer hose problems come down to three numbers and one thread. Get the pressure rating, the bore and the fitting right and the hose lasts years. Get any of them wrong and you are back at the counter, usually holding something that burst at the crimp.

The short version
  • Match the working pressure to your machine, then add headroom. A 3,000 psi washer wants a hose rated 3,750 psi or better.
  • 1/4 inch suits most consumer machines. 3/8 inch is the professional standard above roughly 3 GPM.
  • M22 is the common consumer thread. Professional gear runs 3/8 inch NPT with quick disconnects.
  • Rubber stays flexible in cold and takes abrasion. Thermoplastic is lighter but stiffens up.
  • Hot water machines need a hose rated for it. A cold water hose on a hot machine fails early.
  • Length costs you pressure at the nozzle. Buy what you need, not the longest on the shelf.

Step 01Start with your machine's pressure

Everything else follows from this number. Your pressure washer has a maximum output in psi, and the hose has to be rated above it. Not equal to it, above it.

The rating is on the label attached to the pump housing or the frame, and in the manual if the label has worn off. You are looking for two figures: maximum psi and flow in gallons per minute. Both matter, and most people only ever note the first.

Working pressure is not burst pressure

Hose carries two ratings and they get confused constantly. Working pressure is what the hose is designed to run at continuously. Burst pressure is where it fails on a test rig, typically around four times the working figure. Burst pressure is a manufacturing benchmark, not a target. Buy on working pressure and ignore the bigger number on the packaging.

Leave yourself headroom

We suggest a hose rated 25 to 30 percent above your machine's maximum. A 3,000 psi washer wants something rated 3,750 psi or better.

That margin is not caution for its own sake. Pressure spikes when you release the trigger and the pump deadheads. It spikes again on start-up. Hot water raises internal pressure. And a hose loses capability as it ages, so a hose bought with no margin is running at its limit on day one and beyond it by year two.

Step 02Pick the bore before the length

Inside diameter decides how much water the hose can carry without choking the machine. Pressure washer hose comes in three common bores.

  • 1/4 inch. Consumer and light commercial machines, generally under 3 GPM. Lighter, cheaper, easier to coil.
  • 5/16 inch. The middle ground, found on some prosumer machines.
  • 3/8 inch. The professional standard. Anything above roughly 4 GPM should be on 3/8 inch, and most contractor machines are.

Undersizing the bore is the mistake that costs cleaning power. A machine that can deliver 4 GPM through a 3/8 inch line will not deliver it through 1/4 inch, no matter what the pump is rated for. The hose becomes the restriction, you lose pressure at the nozzle, and the job takes longer.

Rule of thumb

Match the bore to the machine's outlet, not to what feels lighter in your hand. If the outlet is 3/8 inch, run 3/8 inch. Stepping down to save weight throws away flow you have already paid for.

Step 03Buy the length you need

Longer hose means less walking and more pressure loss. Both are real, and the trade sits differently for everyone.

Pressure drops across any length of hose because of friction between the water and the bore wall. How much depends on the bore, the flow rate and the length together, so a single figure per hundred feet is misleading. What holds true is the direction: smaller bore and higher flow mean steeper loss, and doubling the length roughly doubles the drop.

In practice, 50 feet is the standard assembly and suits most work. Contractors running larger machines commonly go to 100 or 150 feet and step up to 3/8 inch bore specifically to absorb the loss. Beyond that it is worth thinking about moving the machine instead of adding hose.

Measure before you buy

Walk the job from where the machine will sit to the furthest thing you need to reach, then add ten to twenty percent. Hose pulled taut fatigues at the fittings, and the crimp is where assemblies fail.

Step 04Choose the material

Three constructions dominate, and the right one depends on where the hose lives rather than what it costs.

One detail worth knowing: non-marking hose exists and it matters more than people expect. A standard black rubber hose dragged across a customer's driveway leaves a black line. We stock black, blue non-marking and grey non-marking, and wash contractors ask for the non-marking by name.

Step 05Get the fitting right

This is where most trips to the counter start. The hose is fine, the machine is fine, and the two will not talk to each other.

M22 on consumer machines

Most consumer and prosumer washers use M22, a metric thread that shows up on the pump outlet, the hose ends and the spray gun inlet. It is convenient until you need a part, at which point a metric thread on an American shelf becomes awkward.

That is what M22 to pipe thread adapters solve. Convert the M22 to standard NPT once and every fitting, coupler and gun on the wall becomes an option. It is the single most common thing we hand across the counter for pressure washer work.

NPT and quick disconnects on professional gear

Contractor machines generally run 3/8 inch NPT with quick disconnect couplers, so hoses, guns and surface cleaners swap without tools. Straight-through, non-valved quick disconnects are the ones you want here, because they give maximum flow and minimal pressure drop. Valved couplers restrict the bore and cost you pressure.

Do not tape a pressure washer fitting

Thread tape belongs on tapered pipe thread only. M22 and quick disconnect ends seal on an O-ring or a machined face, and tape there prevents the faces seating properly while shedding shreds into the pump. See our pipe fittings and valves page for where tape does belong.

Step 06Match the temperature

Hot water machines need hose built for hot water, and this is not a detail you can economise on. A cold water hose on a hot machine does not fail dramatically; it hardens, loses flexibility and splits at a bend some weeks later.

Hot water pressure washer hose is generally rated to around 200°F and uses a different tube compound to survive it. If your machine has a burner, check the hose rating before anything else, because the temperature spec will narrow your options faster than the pressure will.

Cold water hose is fine for cold water machines, but consider where it lives. A hose stored on an unheated truck through a Long Island winter wants to be rubber, because thermoplastic in the cold is genuinely difficult to work with.

Step 07Match the nozzle to the job

The hose delivers the pressure and the nozzle decides what that pressure does. Spray tips are colour coded to a standard, and using the wrong one is how people damage what they are cleaning.

The red zero degree tip is the one that causes trouble. It concentrates the full output of the machine into a point, which strips paint, gouges timber and scores concrete. Start wide and work down, rather than starting narrow and finding out.

Worth taking seriously

A pinhole spray can put you in surgery

High pressure injection injuries are the reason this equipment deserves respect. The jet drives water and whatever it is carrying through the skin, leaving a mark that looks trivial while causing deep tissue damage underneath. Hand surgeons treat them as surgical emergencies, and delayed treatment risks infection, permanent damage or amputation.

A retrospective study of United States emergency department data covering 2012 to 2021 examined more than 15,000 high-pressure injection injury encounters and found that consumer pressure washers accounted for around 90 percent of them, ahead of industrial paint sprayers. The CDC publishes a short safety sheet aimed specifically at drivers and mechanics using pressure washers on trucks and equipment, covering PPE, GFCI testing and the hazards of running petrol units in enclosed spaces. It is two pages and worth the read: CDC pressure washer safety tip sheet.

The same principle applies to the hose itself. A pinhole leak in a pressurised line is not a slow drip, it is a fine jet you may not see. Never run a hand along a pressurised hose looking for a leak. Shut the machine down, release the pressure and inspect it dry.
