Signs it is time to replace your power steering hose
A power steering hose rarely fails without warning. It leaks, it whines, the wheel gets heavy in a car park, and the fluid turns dark. Each of those points at a different stage of the same failure, and catching it early is the difference between a hose and a pump.
- Check you have hydraulic steering first. Many cars built in the last fifteen years use electric assist and have no power steering hose at all.
- Reddish fluid on the driveway under the front of the car is the most common first sign.
- Whining that rises with engine speed usually means the pump is pulling air or running low.
- Heavy steering at parking speed before it is heavy on the road points at pressure loss.
- Foamy or dark fluid means air or debris in the system, and neither belongs there.
- Losing assist does not mean losing steering. The wheel gets very heavy, which is dangerous in its own way.
- Pressure hose gets replaced, not patched. Nothing you clamp onto it will hold at operating pressure.

Worth two minutes before you go looking for a leak, because a good number of vehicles simply do not have one.
Hydraulic or electric?
Open the bonnet and look for a small reservoir with a cap marked power steering, usually with reddish or amber fluid in it. If there is one, the system is hydraulic and it has hoses. If there is not, you almost certainly have electric power steering.
A belt-driven pump pushes fluid through a high pressure hose to the rack and back through a return hose. Everything in this guide applies.
An electric motor assists the rack directly. No pump, no fluid, no hoses. If assist fails, it is electrical or mechanical and needs a diagnostic scan, not a hose.
Electric power steering has been standard on most new cars for years, which is why it now features in vehicle recalls rather than fluid leaks. A 2025 NHTSA safety recall covering loss of power steering assist is a good example, and the fix there was a steering gear assembly, not a hose.
Plenty of vehicles still run hydraulic steering, particularly trucks, vans, older cars and anything with serious towing capacity. If that is what you have, read on.
Two hosesPressure side and return side
A hydraulic system has two hoses and they are not interchangeable.
The pressure hose runs from the pump to the steering rack or gearbox. It carries fluid at high pressure, typically somewhere in the region of a thousand psi and higher on some systems, and it is built accordingly with wire reinforcement and crimped ends. This is the one that fails dramatically.
The return hose carries fluid back from the rack to the reservoir at low pressure. It is a simpler hose, often just clamped on, and it fails quietly by seeping rather than bursting.
Return hose is not pressure hose. Fitting low pressure hose to the pressure side, or clamping where the original was crimped, gives you a repair that holds fine on the drive and lets go the first time somebody parks with the wheel on full lock.

Follow the hose from the pump with a torch, paying attention to the bends and anywhere it passes close to something solid or hot. Fluid attracts dust, so a leak marks itself as a dark greasy patch long before it drips.

The reservoir is the most useful diagnostic on the car and it takes thirty seconds to read.

One caution on fluid type. Some vehicles take a dedicated power steering fluid, some take automatic transmission fluid, and they are not interchangeable. Check the cap or the manual rather than pouring in whatever is on the shelf.
Straight talkWhat losing assist actually feels like
You do not lose steering. You lose assist.
Plenty of articles claim a failed power steering hose means total loss of steering control. That is not correct, and the exaggeration does nobody any favours.
The steering remains mechanically connected. What you lose is the hydraulic help. NHTSA states the position plainly in its safety recall documentation: if power steering assist is lost, manual steering functionality is retained but requires increased steering effort, particularly at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. Which is still serious. A heavy wheel at low speed is genuinely dangerous during an emergency manoeuvre, in a car park, or for anyone without the upper body strength to force it. And a hose that bursts dumps fluid onto a hot exhaust. Treat it urgently. Just do not let anyone tell you the wheel disconnects.
Repair or replaceWhy pressure hose gets replaced
Return hose can sometimes be shortened and re-clamped if the failure is right at the end and there is length to spare. Pressure hose cannot.
A pressure line runs at over a thousand psi with heat and constant vibration. Nothing you clamp, tape or splice onto it will hold there. The only correct repair is a new hose crimped to the correct fittings, which is why every reputable shop replaces rather than patches.
What that does not mean is buying a dealer assembly. The fittings on the ends of your old hose are usually perfect, and those are the expensive, vehicle-specific part.
