The difference between A/C lines and A/C hoses

Both carry refrigerant around your vehicle's air conditioning system. One is rigid aluminium tube and the other is flexible barrier hose, and they fail for completely different reasons. Knowing which you are looking at decides whether the fix is a repair or a whole new assembly.

The short version
  • Lines are rigid aluminium tube. They run where nothing moves and they mostly fail from corrosion or impact.
  • Hoses are flexible barrier rubber. They connect anything that moves, and they fail from age, heat and vibration.
  • Modern A/C hose has a nylon liner. Without it, refrigerant permeates straight through the rubber wall.
  • Most assemblies are a bit of both, aluminium tube crimped to hose at a beadlock fitting.
  • The system must be discharged by a certified technician before anything is opened. That is federal law, not shop policy.
  • A failed assembly usually does not need a dealer part. The old one can be rebuilt onto its original fittings.

The engine moves on its mounts and the body does not. A rigid tube spanning that gap would crack within months, so wherever the system crosses from something that moves to something that does not, there is hose. Everywhere else, tube is cheaper, tidier and more durable.

A myth worth killing

Automotive A/C lines are aluminium, not copper. Copper is a building HVAC material and you will not find it in a car's air conditioning. If a guide tells you to braze your A/C lines, it is describing residential equipment, not your vehicle.

Why it mattersRefrigerant escapes through plain rubber

This is the part most people have never been told, and it explains why A/C hose is not just hose.

Refrigerant molecules are small enough to pass through ordinary rubber. Not through a hole, through the wall itself. The system does not leak in any way you could find with soap, it simply loses charge slowly over years.

The fix is barrier hose, which carries a thin nylon liner inside the rubber tube. Nylon is dense enough to stop permeation, so the refrigerant stays where it belongs. When the industry moved from R-12 to R-134a in the mid nineties this became essential, because R-134a permeates faster than the refrigerant it replaced.

Which is why fitting generic rubber hose to an A/C system does not work. It will hold pressure, pass a leak test and be flat in a season.

ConstructionWhat barrier hose is actually made of

Three layers, each doing one job.

  • The liner. Thin nylon, the layer that stops refrigerant permeating out through the wall.
  • The tube and reinforcement. Synthetic rubber over textile braid, holding system pressure and keeping the bore open through bends.
  • The cover. Protects against under-bonnet heat, ozone, oil and chafing where the hose passes anything solid.

Three types worth knowing

Barrier hose is the standard. Heavy walled rubber with the nylon liner, suitable for R-134a and R-12, and normally terminated with beadlock fittings crimped on permanently.

Reduced barrier hose is a newer construction with a much thinner wall and a smaller outside diameter with it. That makes it far easier to route through a crowded engine bay, and it can be clamped as well as crimped.

Braided stainless is the show-car answer. A nylon inner tube inside a stainless outer braid, compatible with R-134a and R-12, with nickel plated reusable fittings. It costs more and it looks the part, which is exactly why people buy it. Full range on A/C hoses and lines.

PressureHigh side and low side

An A/C system has two pressures, and each side asks different things of the plumbing.

The high side runs from the compressor outlet through the condenser. Refrigerant here is hot and under considerably more pressure. The low side returns from the evaporator to the compressor, cool and at much lower pressure.

Actual figures move with ambient temperature, humidity and the refrigerant in the system, which is why a static table is close to useless. What matters practically is that the two sides use different fittings and different service ports specifically so nobody connects to the wrong one. If a gauge set will not fit, that is the design working.

Hose and line for the high side are built to the higher rating. Fitting a low side part to the high side is a failure waiting for the first hot day.

They are not interchangeable, and the fittings differ deliberately to stop cross charging. Check the label under the bonnet before anybody adds anything.

DiagnosisTelling a failed line from a failed hose

Both show up the same way from the driver's seat: the air stops being cold. Underneath, the signs differ.

Lines

  • Corrosion or pitting on the aluminium, especially where road salt collects.
  • Physical damage from stone strike or a previous repair.
  • Oily residue at a joint, since refrigerant carries compressor oil and leaves a stain where it escapes.

Hoses

  • Cracking or crazing in the cover, usually worst nearest the engine.
  • Swelling or a soft spot, which means the wall has failed internally.
  • Chafing where the hose has been resting against a bracket or edge.
  • Hardening, so the hose has gone stiff and lost the flexibility it existed to provide.
The one to look for first

Oily dirt. Refrigerant carries oil, so wherever it has been escaping, dust sticks to the residue and leaves a dark greasy patch. That patch marks the leak far more reliably than anything you can see in the hose itself.

The system has to be discharged properly first

Refrigerant cannot legally be vented to atmosphere. Under Section 609 of the Clean Air Act, anyone servicing a motor vehicle air conditioning system for payment must be trained and certified through an EPA-approved programme and must use approved recovery equipment.

Practically, that means a shop recovers the charge before the system is opened, and recharges it afterwards. We build the assembly. The recovery and the recharge belong with a certified technician.

Worth knowing that Section 609 covers vehicles specifically. Section 608 is the equivalent for building systems, and the two are not the same certification. If someone offers to top up your car's A/C without recovering anything first, that is a sign to go elsewhere.

At the counterRebuilt, not replaced

Here is the part that saves people real money. When an A/C assembly fails, the hose is what failed. The aluminium tube and the fittings on the ends are almost always fine.

So we cut the old hose off, keep your original ends, and crimp new barrier hose between them. You get a part that fits exactly like the one that came off, because the ends are the ones that came off, and you avoid dealer pricing and lead times on a discontinued assembly.

  • Barrier and reduced barrier hose in the common sizes, beadlocked to your fittings.
  • Braided stainless with reusable ends for builds and restorations.
  • Repairs to your existing assembly, which is the usual answer when a dealer part is expensive or no longer available.
