The Decision
When it stops making sense to drive here
There is a point where bringing hose work to a supplier stops being the sensible option. It is not usually about the price of the assemblies. It is about the trip.
A shop replacing a couple of hoses a month is better off here. The stock depth, the fitting range and somebody who identifies threads for a living all cost you nothing. But a shop doing it weekly is spending real time on the road, and every one of those trips happens at the worst moment, because hoses fail when equipment is needed rather than when the schedule is clear.
A crimper on your own bench changes the arithmetic. The assembly gets made in the ten minutes it actually takes, the machine goes back to work, and nobody loses half a day. For fleets running vac trucks, excavators or anything that idles expensively, that is usually where the money is.
The catch is that owning a crimper is not the same as being set up to crimp. Die sets, a proper cut-off, hose and fittings on the shelf and somebody trained to do it are the difference between an asset and an expensive paperweight. That is the part we handle rather than leaving you to work it out.

Three ways to crimp
Which one suits you comes down to where the work happens and how big the hose gets, rather than how much you want to spend.
Bench crimpers
The workhorse. Mounted, powered and set up once so the machine is always ready. Handles the widest size range and the fastest cycle, and it is the right answer wherever the work comes to a fixed location.

Portable crimpers
Built to travel and to run off what a truck can supply. Smaller size range and a slower cycle than a bench unit, and worth every bit of that if the machine you are fixing cannot be driven anywhere.

Hand crimp tools
Manual tooling for small bore work and low volume. Slow, physical and limited in what it will do properly, but genuinely useful in a toolbox for the small line that fails miles from anywhere.

What a crimper alone will not do
Buying the machine is the easy part. These are the pieces that decide whether the assemblies coming off it are any good.
Die sets
Each hose and fitting pairing has a specified die and a crimp diameter. The dies you need depend entirely on what you actually build, which is why a machine sold with a generic set usually arrives short of the ones you use daily.
A proper cut-off
A clean square cut is the difference between wire seating under the ferrule and wire puncturing the tube. A hacksaw does not do this. A cut-off saw built for hose does.
Calipers
The finished crimp gets measured, not assumed. Machines drift and dies wear, and an unverified crimp is a guess with a fitting attached. This is the step most in-house setups skip.
Hose and fittings on the shelf
A crimper is worthless without the stock to feed it. We set levels around what you actually consume so the machine has something to press when a hose fails at seven in the morning.
Somebody trained
Insertion depth, die selection, orientation and verification are all learnable in an afternoon and all easy to get wrong unlearned. We come to you and teach the crew that will use it.
Calibration over time
Crimpers need checking against a known standard periodically. A machine that has run two winters without a check is producing very consistent results at the wrong number.

Not ready to buy one yet
Perfectly reasonable. Plenty of shops run this way for years and it works. Bring the hose and the fittings and we will crimp them, or buy both here and leave with the assembly finished, usually inside twenty minutes.

Before You Buy
Common questions
There is no fixed number, because it depends far more on what a lost hour costs you than on the volume itself. A fleet where a truck idling is expensive reaches the point much sooner than a workshop where somebody can drop a hose off on the way past. Run your own figures above and it usually becomes obvious.
It depends on the size range and which dies you need, so any number quoted without knowing that is guesswork. Tell us the largest hose you will crimp, the fittings you use and roughly the volume, and we will put a real figure against it. On higher purchase volumes the equipment may come discounted or free.
Most of it is learnable in an afternoon, which is exactly why we do the afternoon. Insertion depth, die selection and verifying the finished diameter are the three things that get skipped by people working it out alone, and all three produce assemblies that hold on the bench and fail in the field. Training is included.
Only where a published crimp specification exists for that pairing. A fitting from one manufacturer on hose from another has no specification between them, and the result sometimes works and sometimes does not. Buying hose and fittings as matched pairs is what keeps the machine producing reliable joints.
Periodically, and more often on a machine living in a truck than one bolted to a bench. Dies wear and settings drift, and neither announces itself. Measuring every finished crimp with calipers catches drift as it happens, which is the habit worth building from day one.
Yes, and most customers with a machine still send us the awkward ones. Very large bore, obsolete fittings and anything needing the stock depth stays counter work. The crimper handles the routine volume and we keep the exceptions. Ask at either counter or through the contact page.
