Different Rules
Built to come apart, not to stay put
Industrial fittings solve a different problem from hydraulic ones. Pressures are usually lower, bores are usually larger, and most of these connections are designed to be opened and closed as part of the working day rather than only during a repair.
That changes what matters. A hydraulic fitting is judged on how well it seals under six thousand psi. An industrial fitting is judged on whether somebody wearing wet gloves can connect it one handed, whether it survives being dropped in gravel, and whether it still seals after four hundred cycles.
It also changes how the fitting attaches to the hose. Thick walled large bore hose does not take a hydraulic style ferrule, so most industrial ends are banded on with external clamps or held by a shank and a set of bands. Everything on this wall is sold individually. One replacement coupler, one gasket, one set of bands. That is the whole point of having a counter.

Which cam and groove type do you need?
Cam and groove fittings are named by a single letter, and the letter describes two things: which half it is, and what goes on the back of it. Pick both and the letter appears.
The male half with a barbed shank on the back, banded onto the end of a length of hose. This is the most common fitting on a suction or discharge line, because it puts the male half on the hose and the coupler on the pump or the tank.

Cam and groove covers a lot of industrial work but nowhere near all of it. These are the other end types that come across the counter regularly.
Air king and universal
Interlocking claw couplings for compressed air, held by a pin and backed with a safety cable. They connect in a quarter turn, take rough handling and are standard on jackhammer and site air lines.
Shanks, bands and clamps
Barbed or serrated shanks pushed into the hose and secured with external bands crimped down over the cover. Worm gear and T-bolt clamps for lighter duty. The standard way large bore hose gets terminated.
King nipples and hose menders
Male threaded shanks for water and general transfer, plus menders for joining two lengths of hose. Simple, cheap and the answer to a surprising share of counter questions.
Ground joint couplings
Sometimes called Boss couplings. Metal to metal seal tightened with a hammer wrench, used on steam and hot water where a gasket seal would not survive. Fitted with interlocked shanks and safety clamps.
Flanges and bolt-on ends
Where a line connects to a pump, a tank or fixed pipework and is not meant to come apart often. Common on chemical transfer and larger process installations.
Whip checks and gaskets
Cable restraints that hold two halves together if a coupling lets go under pressure, plus replacement gaskets in the material that suits the medium. Both cost almost nothing and both matter.
Materials
Pick for the environment, not the price
Light, affordable and the default across general transfer work. Not the choice where salt or aggressive chemicals are involved, and worth avoiding on lines carrying certain fuels where the metal can react.
The answer near salt water, on food and beverage lines, and anywhere the chemistry attacks aluminium. Costs more, lasts far longer in those environments, and does not seize the way corroded aluminium does.
Good corrosion resistance with easier machining, common on water, air and smaller bore transfer work. Softer than stainless, so less suited to lines that get dropped and dragged.
Very light and chemically resistant, used where weight matters or where metal would be attacked outright. Lower pressure and temperature limits than any of the metals.

Mixing metals is where trouble starts
An aluminium adapter in a stainless coupler will corrode at the joint over time, particularly outdoors or anywhere near salt. It works at first and then seizes, and by then the only way apart is a saw.
Keep both halves in the same material where you can. Where you cannot, know that the softer metal is the one that will give up, and plan the replacement rather than being surprised by it.
Gaskets are the part everyone forgets
A cam and groove seal is a gasket sitting in the female coupler, and it has to suit the medium as much as the hose tube does. Buna handles oil and general work, EPDM suits water and chemicals, PTFE goes where nothing else survives.
They are inexpensive, they wear, and a weeping coupling is very often a two dollar gasket rather than a failed fitting. Worth carrying spares.

Common questions
Cam and groove is sized by the bore it serves, so a two inch coupling goes on two inch hose or a two inch pipe thread. The letter tells you the configuration and the number tells you the size, which is why a fitting is usually described as something like a two inch type E. Bring the hose or the existing fitting and we will size it in seconds.
You can, and it works to begin with. Over time the two metals corrode at the joint, especially outdoors or near salt, and the coupling seizes. If the two halves belong to different owners, as often happens on tanker and delivery work, at least know which one will give up first. Where you control both, keep them matched.
Almost always the gasket. They flatten, harden and get chewed up by grit, and a worn one will let a joint weep while everything else looks fine. Check the gasket is present, seated squarely and made of a material that suits what is running through the line. Replacements cost very little and we sell them singly.
Either. Plenty of customers buy the shank and the bands and do it themselves. Plenty bring the hose and have it banded here, which takes minutes and uses the correct band size and crimp force for that wall thickness. Both are normal counter work.
On any air or pressurised line where a parted coupling would put a loose hose end near people, yes. A hose that lets go under pressure moves faster than anybody can react to, and a cable restraint is the difference between a bad noise and a serious injury. They cost a few dollars.
