The Problem
Same size, same thread, still no
Compressed air fittings are the most confusing thing in a workshop, and the reason is that the industry never settled on one standard. Several manufacturers each established their own plug shape, all of them stayed in use, and all of them are still sold today in the same sizes with the same threads.
What separates them is the profile of the plug itself. The length of the nose, the angle of the taper and where the locking groove sits vary by fractions of an inch between one profile and the next. Enough that the balls in the coupler will not drop into the groove, not nearly enough to see across a counter.
Body size is a separate thing again. Most American shops run a quarter inch body, which is the physical size of the coupling and has nothing to do with the pipe thread on the back of it. A quarter inch body coupler with a three eighths thread is entirely normal, and confusing the two is how people end up with a fitting that screws in perfectly and still will not connect to anything.
None of this is worth solving from a catalogue. Bring the coupler or the plug you already have, and everything else in the shop gets matched to it. The hydraulic equivalent of this problem, which behaves differently, sits on hydraulic quick disconnects.

Why the coupling is starving your tool
A grinder that runs weak is blamed on the compressor far more often than it deserves. The restriction is usually much closer to the tool.
The coupling is the narrowest point
Air passes through a small opening inside every quick disconnect, and that opening is often narrower than the hose bore either side of it. On a high consumption tool the coupling, not the hose or the compressor, is what limits flow.
Grinders, sanders and impact guns
Continuous duty tools move far more air than a nailer or a blowgun. On these a high flow coupling is worth the change, and putting a standard one in the middle of the line undoes the benefit of everything else.
Two different measurements
Body size is the physical size of the coupling. Thread size is what screws into the tool or the hose. A quarter inch body with a three eighths thread is common and correct, and mixing the two up is the usual source of confusion.
Every coupling costs you flow
Three couplings between the compressor and the tool means three restrictions. On a long run with a reel and a whip hose, reducing the number of disconnects does more for tool performance than a bigger hose will.
One profile across the shop
The single best fix for an air system is picking one profile and converting everything to it. Then any tool connects to any hose, nobody hunts for the right adapter, and the drawer of mismatched fittings stops growing.
Universal couplers
Multi-profile couplers accept several plug types in one body. Useful in a mixed shop or a service truck that visits other people's sites, though they generally flow a little less than a dedicated coupling of the same size.

By comparing it against a known one, which is a thirty second job at a counter and close to impossible from a photograph. The differences are fractions of an inch in the nose length and the groove position. Bring a plug or a coupler from the shop and everything else gets matched to it.
